Our Story
Our story began in 2004, when a group of industry professionals recognized a fundamental truth: certain post-industrial materials still had value and should never be treated as waste. At a time when landfilling and incineration were the default solutions, we set out to challenge the status quo by creating sustainable, innovative pathways to extend the life cycles of materials that had long been overlooked.
We invested years of research, development, and engineering to develop technologies that could unlock the hidden potential of clean, non-hazardous industrial waste and byproducts. The result was a proprietary system capable of converting these waste materials into an energy-dense engineered fuel, an energy-dense, renewable alternative to coal. This breakthrough helped reduce the environmental footprint of utility power plants, cement and lime kilns, and paper mills while delivering measurable carbon-reduction benefits.
In 2005, our first commercial manufacturing facility was commissioned on the East Coast, marking the beginning of a new era in waste-to-value innovation. After nearly eight years of proven results, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency issued our company the first-ever legitimacy letter under the Non-Hazardous Secondary Materials Rule, enacted in 2011. This historic recognition redefined certain industrial waste materials and byproducts as secondary materials, not solid waste, opening the door to broader beneficial reuse across the industry. Additional facilities followed in the Midwest (2015) and the Southeast (2019), expanding capacity and impact. In 2020, the company was acquired by private equity, providing increased resources and accelerating strategic growth.
Building on this legacy, Innovative Waste Strategies (IWS) was founded in 2021 with a mission to scale the next generation of materials-processing solutions across North America. Initially focused on consulting and advisory services, IWS helped companies enter the engineered-fuel sector and supported industrial facilities transitioning from coal to alternative fuels.
By 2023, we began receiving outreach from former partners seeking support in diverting waste from landfills and mass-burn incinerators. This shift signaled a broader market need, and we responded.
Today, IWS delivers complete, end-to-end solutions to label and consumer-packaging manufacturers across North America. While we continue to offer advisory services, our core focus is on providing tailored disposal alternative solutions for manufacturing businesses. Through deep industry expertise, long-standing strategic relationships, and an unparalleled value-chain model, we support nationally and globally recognized brands committed to sustainable, circular operations.
